App for Braille

App for Braille

In the last 5 years all the focus of technology has been towards touchscreen devices, because it the newest technology and is also very efficient, seeing how a large screen can also double as keyboard when needed. However the vision-impaired have not benefited from the advance in technology, on the contrary, things are getting harder for them.
There are certain systems and apps that help blind people work with computers and especially touchscreen devices like TextOverSpeech, Braille keyboards which can be attached to devices or software that describes pictures aurally.
A new app is out which will help visually chalaenged person make the most out of their touchscreen devices. The new app is called iBrailler and as you can imagine it is aimed at Apple users exclusively, or at least momentarily. The app started as a project in 2011 at Stanford University.
This app has a new approach to typing and positions the keyboard under the correct fingers of the user. What this means is that every time you switch the position of your hands or fingers the app will re-configure the keyboard. This is a great feature seeing how previous Braille technology was very expensive.
The app has received very good feedback and according to Ed Summers (sight-handicapped computer scientist) it has another advantage: that of image. His opinion on this is that blind kids will no longer have to stand out of the crowd (in the bad way) because they have to use bulky technology and can now use a tablet or smartphone just as regular seeing persons.
